What's this
Inside the glass tube is a curious “antigravity” scene: the fluid on top is a liquid, while the “gas” below seems to hold it up. What you’re seeing isn’t magic—it’s a special state of matter.
- The key player is xenon in its supercritical state, often called the fourth state of matter. A supercritical fluid looks like a gas, but it can have a liquid-like density.
- In this tube, we seal two components together: xenon and a dyed alcohol.
- Under the right temperature and pressure, xenon becomes supercritical. It appears gaseous, yet its density reaches about 1.1 g/cm³.
- That density is actually higher than the alcohol’s. As a result, the liquid alcohol floats on top of the “gaseous” supercritical xenon.
- This inversion of the usual order—liquid above, “gas” below—creates the striking antigravity effect.
In short: supercritical xenon behaves like a gas to the eye, but it’s dense enough to support a lighter liquid above it.
