The tube contains a remarkable fluid that always sits above the gas, creating an “antigravity” effect. The phenomenon arises from a fascinating physical state: the fourth state of matter— the supercritical state. A supercritical fluid looks like a gas but has a very high density. In the glass tube, xenon and alcohol (dyed) are sealed together. The supercritical xenon appears gaseous, yet its density is about 1.1 g/cm³—higher than that of alcohol—so the liquid alcohol always floats on top of the gaseous, supercritical xenon, producing the antigravity effect.
